It may appear to happen out of the blue, you find one of the mature trees on your property uprooted. With mature trees accounting for up to 10% of your assessed property value depending on the market you’ll want to avoid losing them. There are ways to tell if your trees are in danger of falling over and what you can do to prevent that from happening.
Here are a few things to look for courtesy of Edmonton Arborists TimberTrim Tree Works.
How To Inspect Your Trees
These are your trees so no one knows them as well as you do which makes you qualified to notice changes. Periodically inspecting them is the a good way to observe even subtle changes. For example after they leaf in the Spring, leaves are off in the Fall and after any storm check roots, branches, foliage and bark for changes.
Leaning Trees
While trees don’t grow straight be aware of any noticeable leaning could be caused by uneven weight distribution or anchor root damage. The trees is highly unstable and it may be a good time to consult an arborist.
Multiple Trunks
It may come as a surprise that a tree with multiple trunks or with a trunk that splits in one trunk can be unstable. Watch for V or U shaped multiple trunks which signal weak points on mature trees.
Construction
Installing a new driveway or building an addition means precious root systems can be disturbed and damage may occur even years later.
